LIFE CYCLE AND REPRODUCTION
German cockroaches have three developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females develop 4 to 8 capsules containing 30 to 48 eggs each in their lifetime. Capsules hatch about 28 days after they begins to form. A few weeks thereafter, a new egg capsule begins to form. The egg stage varies in duration from 14 to 35 days. German cockroaches have 6 to 7 nymphal stages occurring over a period of 6 to 31 weeks. They express incomplete metamorphosis: zygotes develop within eggs and hatch directly into nymphs, which then grow into adult cockroaches.
The complete life cycle of the cockroach is roughly 100 to 200 days for females, during which 10,000 descendants of a single cockroach can be produced! Cockroach infestation occurs quickly!
DO COCKROACHES AFFECT HUMANS?
Cockroaches are active primarily at night when people are sleeping. They consume a wide variety of foods, including dead organisms. They usually eat human foods, especially starches, sweets, seeds, grains, grease, and meat products. German cockroaches have also been known to eat soap, toothpaste, and glue.
German cockroaches act as hosts to several parasites, such as bacteria, protozoans, and viruses, which lead to human ailments. COMMON SPECIES FOUND LOCALLY

- German Cockroaches: German roaches are normally found inside homes and restaurants. They are light brown or tan coloration and have two black horizontal stripes located behind their head. They normally grow to 13-16 mm. They prefer warm and humid areas often found such as kitchens and bathrooms. They will feed off crumbs or dirty dishes left in the sink overnight.
- Oriental Cockroaches: Oriental roaches are a reddish brown and shiny black color and can grow up to 25-32 mm. They are most commonly found outside in areas such as mulch in landscape beds, leaf piles, and under stones or debris. If accessible, oriental roaches can live in under porches, and wall voids and crawlspaces. Their small size allows them to get into homes through open doors or gaps beneath siding, even following utility lines, pipes, open drains or sewers into your home.
- American Cockroaches: These cockroaches can grow to be quite large, up to 3 inches in length. They are reddish brown. They also have a yellow band behind their head. They are normally found outdoors but will enter homes to find water and food. They prefer warm damp areas such as flowerbeds and under mulch. These roaches are also very common to found in the sewer systems.
- Brown-Banded Cockroaches: One of the smallest roaches they only grow to 11-14.5 mm. They are light brown and have bands you can see running across their wings. Unlike the German roaches they prefer less humid and warmer areas. While they will eat crumbs like other roaches, this species prefers starch found in book bindings, wallpaper glue and stamps.
